New developments can do many things. Bring talent back to Southwest Michigan, build our local economy and quite literally build a bridge between communities. This Herald Palladium article goes into detail of the latest plans for one of this area's largest community development projects.

The developers of Harbor Village, the seventh and largest neighborhood in the Harbor Shores project, are ready to launch what they are calling their “crown jewel.”

A ground-breaking for the community that will encompass 78 homes over 11 acres, surrounded by natural and recreational amenities, will take place at 9 a.m. Monday. The ceremony will include a performance by the Benton Harbor High School Drumline.

According to Kerry Wright, director of sales and marketing, the residential endeavor is part of the planning of Harbor Shores that has created “a pretty special lifestyle.”

That includes access to 12 miles of walking trails that lead to marinas, top-flight restaurants, the Renaissance Athletic Club, the Harbor Shores golf course, kayak launches on the Paw Paw River and Jean Klock Park, Wright said.

Harbor Village will eventually be the location of 30 single-family homes and 48 town homes and row houses. Homeowners will be able to enjoy a community park, a clubhouse and swimming pool and boat docks.

“If you’re a boater, you can walk out your front door right to your boat,” Wright said.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of August, with the first homes occupied by late spring or early summer of 2018.

The layout was designed to provide just about every home with a view of the Paw Paw or St. Joseph rivers. The homes themselves, conceived by lead architect Andrew von Maur, borrow from the Old St. Joseph neighborhood, with porches that lead to the sidewalks and wide streets with views of the nearby lakefront.

A pedestrian bridge across the Paw Paw River will connect Harbor Village to the Benton Harbor Arts District, as well as the $125 million Whirlpool North American Headquarters and Global Refrigeration Centers.
