(March 1, 2016-Benton Harbor, MI) Pero Family Farms Food Company, LLC (Pero) received approval on March 1, 2016 from the Benton Charter Township Board of Trustees of a tax abatement of 12 years for an 8,320 square foot expansion to their 2130 Yore Avenue facility. The investment for this project will provide additional room between processing lines and equipment to support the jobs created from Pero’s September 2015 project. In September 2015, Pero made the transition from a cold-storage distribution center to a fresh cut vegetable facility. Since this transition, Pero has experienced a growth in sales, and this expansion will allow them to increase their production.

Alfonso Chavez, General Manager, of Pero Family Farms Food Company’s facility in Michigan, and Cathy Tilley, Business Development Manager of Cornerstone Alliance, presented the project to the Township on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.

“We are delighted with the growth Pero Family Farms is experiencing,” said Cathy Tilley. “The Cornerstone Alliance Business Development team has been working with Pero since 2015 as they converted their distribution center to a fresh cut vegetable facility, creating 74 new jobs over a three period. As part of this transition, Pero was able to retain 50 existing jobs, making them full time from seasonal.”

The expansion project will begin in March 2016 and is expected to be completed by October 2016.
